Profile of the Soweto Marathon

Edendale race is this Sunday

With the ninth edition of the annual Greater Edendale Race being hosted this Sunday, 15 November 2015, the organisers have called on runners to be part of the popular community road-running event.

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) will once again host the race at the FNB Wadley Stadium in Georgetown, Edendale as part of its social responsibility programme.

Over the years, the race has been attracting nearly 2 000 participants on an annual basis. Prize money totalling nearly R15 000 is up for grabs with a generous first prize of R2 500 for the First Man and First Woman over the finish line respectively.

The first three walkers over the finish line for both the men’s and women’s race will also be rewarded. Additionally, every finisher will take home a medal in addition to all 10km runners receiving an Edendale 10km Race T-shirt.

The race is a major attraction for local schools, with grand prizes for those schools with the most number of finishers. Safety and security is overseen by SAPS and the local traffic police, as well as sixty marshals who will be on duty on the day.

The entry fee for the 10km race is R30 and participants must be at least 15 years old to run it. Temporary licenses will be available at the Registration Desk at a cost of R10 for those runners who are not licensed members of running clubs. Anyone over 9 years old may enter the 5km Fun Run which forms part of the world renowned AIMS Children’s Series Race. The entry fee is R20 but free for school children.

The event is run under the auspices of the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), Athletics South Africa (ASA) and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA).

Pre-entries are currently being taken at Comrades Marathon House (weekdays between 08h00 and 16h30). The local race organizing committee will be at the FNB Wadley Stadium taking entries on Saturday, 14 November 2015 from 11h00 to 14h00. Registration will also be open on the day of the race from 05h00 to 07h00.

CMA Chairperson, Macdonald Chitja says, ‘We would like to thank our partners in this event, the Msunduzi Municipality and Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association who have been supporting this event since its inception. We would also like to thank the Department of Sport and Recreation and our volunteers whose dedication and commitment is vital to the success of the race.’

Hilly Soweto

The 42 kilometre Marathon

The 42 kilometre marathon has a total gain of 458 metres, which means that there are plenty of hills for the hill climbers to enjoy.

The route starts out downhill but there are a number of nasty climbs before the half-way mark.

Unfortunately, the half way mark heralds the point at which the marathon starts climbing so you definitely should leave plenty of energy in your tank for the last half of the race.

The 21 kilometre half marathon

With its total gain of 188 metres, the half marathon certainly isn’t short of hills.

However, like its longer cousin, this race distance starts with downhills.

Runners shouldn’t be fooled as the second half of the race includes most of the uphills.

The 10 kilometre run

Although it is way shorter than either the marathon or the half marathon, the 10 km route also has its fair share of hills.

However, the route is mostly downhill until around the seven kilometre mark, where it starts climbing.

This climbing takes up most of the remainder of the race, so it is definitely advised that runners keep energy for this section.

Running for PinkDrive

The 2015 Totalsports Women’s Race series saw just under 13 000 runners and walkers join forces in Durban, Johannesburg and Stellenbosch where they ran their city in support of PinkDrive.

As a result of the tremendous support received from entrants, event organisers were able to donate a generous sum of R67 432 to this deserving beneficiary.

PinkDrive is a Non-Profit Company (NPC) that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education, and providing and offering breast health services to women across South Africa.

“We love the Totalsports Women’s Race,” says Noelene Kotschan, PinkDrive Founder and CEO.

“The series is a highlight on our events calendar. Runners were treated to superb routes, awesome on route entertainment and an overall fun vibe. Each event offered us a unique platform to reach out to thousands of women (and men), in so doing allowing us to bring home the message that “early detection” really does save lives. All monies raised will go towards keeping our mobile mammography units on the road. We also aim to build more mobile units. The funding received from these events will definitely make a difference in our PINK lives.”

According to Carmen Garzouzie, Head of Totalsports, the Totalsports Women’s Race is a token of recognition to all women.

“Through the Totalsports ‘Women Run This City’ movement we acknowledged that female athletes cannot be ignored. We are committed to inspiring and empowering women, through sport, to take control of their lives and of their health. In staying true to our cause, it was vital that we raised awareness for breast cancer as it affects one out of 26 women in South Africa. We are therefore extremely proud to support PinkDrive and are even more proud to associate our event with the superb work that they do.”

Online entries for the 2016 Totalsports Women’s Race (Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town) will open on Monday, 1 February 2016.

Germiston attracts large tri field

The Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni African Championship takes place for the third time having become one of the most popular triathlons in South Africa. The event is the flagship race in the Standard Bank 5150 African Triathlon Series and one of sixteen 5150 races across the globe.

This year’s race will see a total of 1231 individual athletes from 17 countries competing including 16 professional athletes and 30 teams, the largest field for a non-drafting triathlon in Africa this year.

Germiston residents and spectators will be treated to a feast of world class racing with athletes such as Henri Schoeman and Wian Sullwald who are known for their exploits on the world stage. Schoeman was part of the mixed relay team that won silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Schoeman, who has dominated this race over the past two years, will defend his title for the second successive year with Sullwald once again offering the strongest challenge. Rudolf Naude has shown a lot of promise this year and will also be a contender for a podium finish.

Andrea Steyn, like Schoeman, has never been beaten at the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni African Championship and defends her title for the second time after wins in 2013 and 2014. The vastly experienced Lucie Zelenkova will be tough competition for Steyn.

“We are always encouraged by how many new athletes enter this race and the team category is another great way for people to get their first taste of what triathlons are all about,” says Paul Wolff, Operations Director of IRONMAN South Africa.
