In a remarkable display of determination and exploration, well known trail runners Jock Green and Ryno Griesel embarked on the 9PeaksBike Challenge in May, conquering the highest peaks of South Africa’s provinces on both bikes and foot. This extraordinary twist on the original 9 Peaks Challenge pushed their physical and mental limits as it propelled them through breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable moments.

A photograph of triathlete Emma Browne-Pallant recently caused quite a stir, because it highlighted something that is both natural and common, but seldom spoken about in public, let alone celebrated. Instead of shying away from the story, Emma embraced it, and has helped greatly to break down the social taboos around menstruation.

The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens are just a 45-minute drive from my front door, so I was excited to hear that the gardens have some of the most amazing trails. What they didn’t tell me, though, was that these are not easy trails, and this led to my latest misadventure, involving my speed… or lack thereof.  

They say that if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again until you do. Well, Eugene Lekay must have that advice imprinted on his psyche, because the man who has started the Comrades Marathon 21 times in the last 25 years finally earned his 10th medal in 2023 and claimed his Comrades race number 17696 in perpetuity.
