Pirates 21km

Running - Gauteng
  • 21Km

It's that time of year again where we challenge you to take part in the Pirates 21km, Joburg's Toughest Half Marathon! Happening on 17th February, so take note that you only have a few weeks to get your entry in - and they are flying out the door already, so don't wait, enter now!

Positioned on the calendar as the perfect conditioner for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra and The Comrades Marathon, this race is an ideal opportunity to get an indication of how your training is progressing, and if your legs are ready for the big hills of the big ultras.

Following a circular route,  the route takes runners past the water tower on top of Northcliff Hill. This means that the first two thirds of the race has three challenging climbs, the first starting after just the first kay! Once over the first beast, which gains nearly 100m in height, the route is undulating with some ups and downs, until you hit the long second climb with a height-gain of nearly 200m, followed a short while later by the third big one, gaining nearly 100 metres more. That may not sound like much, but these hills will really test your legs!

The 14km mark signals a big sigh of relief as you hit the King of the Mountain mark, and then it's downhill to the finish, and an opportunity to make up some of the time lost on all the climbing. For those preparing for the ultras, this is a good test of how the legs will handle coming down Chappies at Two Oceans, or on those challenging downhills after the big hills of Comrades (even though it is an 'Up Run' this year).
